George Korfiatis

Dr. Korfiatis’ research expertise is in the area of environmental engineering with emphasis in water quality, groundwater and waste processes. He founded the Center for Environmental Engineering, a multi-million dollar research facility that successfully incubates new research initiatives and provides an effective means of bringing patented technology to the marketplace. Two award winning examples are PlasmaSol and Hydroglobe; both Stevens Startup companies that used patented technology to enhance environmental sustainability through Capillary Discharge Non-Thermal Plasma used in medical sterilization, and Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide adsorption filters for the treatment of potable water contaminated with heavy metals such as arsenic and lead respectively.

He is responsible for the execution and management of over 150 major research projects, valued at over $30 million and has served as a consultant to numerous private and government organizations. He has authored over ninety articles in professional journals, conference proceedings, handbooks and several research reports. He has co-authored multiple research papers and environmental technology patents and has served in numerous environmental committees and task forces for professional organizations, industry and government.

In recognition of his research contributions, Dr. Korfiatis has received honors and awards such as: Finalist, The Tech Museum Technology Awards, Environmental Division, 2002; McLean Chair Professor of Environmental Engineering, 1999; Exemplary Achievement in Research Award, Stevens, 1995; Member of Chi Epsilon, National Honor Fraternity for Civil Engineers; Member of Tau Beta Pi, National Engineering Honor Society; Member of Sigma Xi Honorary Research Fraternity and the Educator of the Year Award - Stevens Chi Epsilon, 1984.

For his achievements with HydroGlobe and PlasmaSol, Dr. Korfiatis was the given the Thomas Alva Edison Award, the Most Innovative Product Award and Environmental Company of the Year and was recognized as a leader in social responsibility in 2004.
